Whatsapp further restricts OS support

Whatsapp will discontinue support for additional operating systems in the coming months. Among other things, users with iOS 7, Android up to 2.3.7 and Nokia S40 will soon have to look for an alternative.

Whatsapp continues to clean up support for older operating systems. After the support for representatives such as Blackberry OS and 10 as well as Windows Phone 8 and Symbian S60 was removed at the beginning of this year, the Facebook subsidiary has now published the list of the next prank candidates. It starts with the Nokia S40 platform, which still runs on numerous feature phones and once had a base of more than 1.5 billion devices. Last year, Whatsapp renewed support for this after numerous user input, but by the end of this year it should definitely be over.

The remaining users of devices with Apple's iOS 7 and Google's Android up to and including 2.3.7 ("Gingerbread"), which are still supported until February 2020, will get a little more lead time. So if you own an iPhone 4 or the Samsung Galaxy S of the first generation and want to continue communicating via Whatsapp, you still have some time to look around for a new device. This is to be borne in mind in that Apple and Google themselves no longer support these old operating systems and no longer offer security updates for them.

Since no new features are being developed for these systems, Whatsapp says that some features may no longer be available before the official end of support.
